"ABAD" beneficiary: Elchin Shamkhalov | Region: Baku | Wood carving
Elchin Shamkhalov
Baku city resident Elchin Shamkhalov is engaged in wood carving craft.

Elchin Shamkhalov says he has learned this art from his family members:

"My mother and brother used to work as a carpenter. I was introduced the wood carving art by them. In the beginning, it was hard for me that I was thinking I could not cope with. But gradually I put all the difficulties behind, and for about four years I trained by my master in Shaki. After graduating from the Art Gymnasium in 1995, I started working independently as a woodworker."

The artisan illustrates sceneries of "Icheri Sheher" (Old Town)  on his workpieces and according to him, he prefers to work on eastern style using mainly cedar and walnut trees:

"My very first work was composed of the patterns on a flat wooden board. At first, I started working with geometric motifs, but later I preferred to use eastern ornaments and "Icheri Sheher" sceneries."

Speaking about the reason of his ABAD application, the craftsman notes that the copyright protection of the handicrafts is crucial for him:

"Previously, I handed over my products to different stores. But buyers did not know that the crafts were made by me. In ABAD crafts and shop centers, a booklet confirming the author of every single product is presented together with each handiwork."

At present Elchin Shamkhalov's  handicrafts are available in "ABAD" exhibition and sales centers.
