"ABAD" beneficiary: Hajiagha Aliyev | Region: Ismayilly | Coppersmithing and embossing
Hajiagha Aliyev, a resident of Lahij, is a master artisan trained in the renowned Lahij coppersmithing school. Beginning to learn the intricacies of coppersmithing at the age of 10, he proudly represents the eighth generation of his family dedicated to this craft. He shares:
“Seven generations before me were engaged in coppersmithing. Continuing our family’s traditions today is a matter of great pride for me. I learned this art from my father, grandfather, and uncles. Our family has never pursued any other craft, and we continue to uphold this legacy.”
Discussing his work, Hajiagha emphasizes his preference for using traditional buta (paisley) patterns:
“I incorporate various motifs, especially buta patterns, into bracelets, headpieces, and trays. Rather than crafting plain copper items, I create intricately patterned vessels, capable of working any design onto metal.”
Previously, Hajiagha sold his creations solely in his hometown of Lahij. To reach a broader market and gain recognition across Azerbaijan, he joined ABAD, stating:
“My goal is for my handcrafted works to be more widely recognized. I believe in ABAD’s support to achieve this.”
Today, Hajiagha Aliyev’s exquisite coppersmithing works, representing the Lahij school, are available at ABAD exhibition and sales centers.
