"ABAD" beneficiary: Rufat Rzayev | Region: Masally | Straw weaving
The art of mat weaving, utilizing wooden sticks, fibrous plants, and grains, has retained its significance to this day. Rufat Rzayev, an ABAD artisan from Astara district, is a dedicated practitioner of this craft. At 53, he teaches technology at a school, where he also shares the secrets of mat weaving with his students. He notes, “In Astara, where I live, there are about 10–15 children who see themselves as successors of this craft, and I guide them through training.”
Speaking about mat weaving, Rufat explains that this art has historically thrived in Masalli, Lankaran, and Astara due to the region’s humid climate. He says:
“In the past, mats were essential in every home because of the humidity. Floors were coated with clay-based plaster, covered with double-layered mats, and topped with a palaz (woven rug). Nowadays, wooden flooring and modern heating systems have reduced the demand for mats. Through ABAD, I offer mat-woven souvenirs like baskets, which support my livelihood and keep my craft alive.”
Rufat Rzayev’s handcrafted works are available for purchase at ABAD craftsmanship centers.
