Shirin Asadullayeva,
a resident of Türkoba village in the Masallı district of Azerbaijan, is a
dedicated practitioner of traditional mat weaving, an esteemed example of
Azerbaijani artisanal heritage. For over 26 years, she has honed her skills in
this craft, employing intricate techniques to create a variety of functional
household items. Utilizing different types of reeds—such as lığ, pizə, ziyəliğ,
and cil—she applies methods like twisting and braiding to produce mats and
other practical objects.
With a mission to
preserve and promote this diminishing art form, Ms.Asadullayeva emphasizes its
cultural significance, stating:
“My primary
objective is to raise awareness of this traditional craft among the public. The
items I create, whether for commercial sale or personal use, are distinguished
by their high quality and durability. I incorporate woven mats into various
household applications, including kitchen utensils. Items such as woven baskets
for storing agricultural produce, carrying baskets, and kitchen mats are
integral to daily life. My aspiration is to encourage widespread adoption of
these environmentally sustainable, high-quality household products across our
society.”
As a member of the “ABAD”
artisan community, Ms. Asadullayeva has expanded her repertoire to include a
diverse array of mat-based products with innovative designs, supported by
“ABAD” in developing new patterns and techniques.
Her meticulously
crafted products are available for purchase at “ABAD” craft centers,
contributing to the preservation and dissemination of this traditional
Azerbaijani art form.
