One of the most
exquisite manifestations of ancient Azerbaijani craftsmanship is the creation
of kəlağayı, a traditional silk headscarf. Throughout history, kəlağayı has
been an integral part of Azerbaijani women’s attire, serving as an embodiment
of the nation’s rich silk-weaving culture through its intricate patterns. The
techniques involved in kəlağayı production have given rise to various artistic
disciplines.
One such discipline
is batik, a contemporary art form originating in East Asia, which has been
recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Among the talented
young artisans advancing the art of batik in Azerbaijan is Zinyat Mirzazada, a
resident of Baku. Hailing from a family of artisans, Ms. Mirzazada employs
melted wax on silk, tulle, or cotton fabrics to create captivating handmade
works of art.
Her distinctive and
visually striking creations have been showcased in exhibitions across various
countries. Seeking to reach a broader audience and establish her own business
in this field, Ms. Mirzazada has joined the “ABAD” initiative.
Within the framework
of this project, her handmade products are marketed and sold through “ABAD”
craft centers, contributing to the promotion and preservation of this
traditional art form.
