"ABAD" beneficiary: Malahat Shamilova | Region: Baku | Painting (vitrage, leather, silk)

It is often said
that an individual’s character and inclinations are profoundly shaped by their
family environment, particularly in fostering a love for science and art. Our
subject, Malahat Shamilova, is no exception. Despite pursuing a degree in law
and working as an educator for many years, her childhood exposure to her
father’s paintbrush and immersion in his artistic creations ignited a deep
passion for painting within her.
Ms. Shamilova
reflects: “My father collected antique items related to Azerbaijan and created
remarkable artworks. I was raised in this atmosphere, cultivating a profound
appreciation and enthusiasm for our culture and fine arts.”
Through her
involvement with ABAD, Ms. Shamilova presents works crafted using the
stained-glass technique, a distinctive form of artistic glasswork.
Recounting her
introduction to ABAD, Ms. Shamilova recalls a pivotal moment at Heydar Aliyev
International Airport: “As we prepared for a flight, my attention was drawn to
a shop in the Duty Free zone adorned with designs reflecting our national
style. An inexplicable force seemed to pull me toward it, overshadowing
thoughts of the flight. After gathering information, I spent the entire journey
contemplating how my own signature could contribute to this initiative. Upon
returning to Azerbaijan, I resolved to become an ABAD artisan. I am confident
that I will never regret this decision, and I believe the ABAD project will
serve as a catalyst and support for me to create even greater works.”
