"ABAD" beneficiary: Ulviyya Shahverdiyeva | Region: Baku | Artistic dolls
Over the past 25 years, the art of doll-making has increasingly established itself as a significant form of visual art. The ABAD program, dedicated to supporting all facets of Azerbaijani folk craftsmanship, reserves a special place for practitioners of this unique art form. Among these artisans is Ulviyya Shahverdiyeva, a Baku-based artist who creates dolls from fabric. Having engaged in painting, weaving, and artistic embroidery since childhood, Shahverdiyeva has been crafting dolls for the past five years. She reflects:
“My father was a painter, but beyond creating paintings, he loved transforming everyday objects into works of art. My passion for art was sparked by observing his creations. Although I pursued formal education in other fields, earning degrees in accounting and pedagogy, I now teach art, effectively utilizing my pedagogical skills.”
Shahverdiyeva describes doll-making as a rare art form that allows her to integrate her diverse skills:
“Doll-making is among the few arts where I can employ all my abilities painting, weaving, and more. I deeply cherish my dolls, and I know they are appreciated at ABAD and by buyers alike.”
Her handcrafted dolls, which reflect a synthesis of traditional craftsmanship and artistic innovation, are available for purchase at ABAD sales centers.
