Born into a family of beekeepers, Ogtay Ganiyev has been engaged in beekeeping for about 20 years.

The beekeeping farm which is legacy passed from his father locates in Brovdal, 1800 meters above sea level.

“Our father taught us to take the resources in the area, work to improve them, and pass them on,” he explains.

The flower honey produced by the Ganiyevs family comes from the nectar of astragalus and thyme flowers vegetating in high mountains:

"What bees need? Protected nature with plenty of flowers ... There was no need to expand the farm before, we could not afford to go out of the market, and we only prepared honey for our family. At this point, "ABAD" comes to help with all its services and in our turn, we have to increase the number of bee families."

According to O. Ganiyev, roughly 2 tons of product will be available when the number of bee families reaches 110-120.

When Oqtay was asked to choose a name for his honey, he didn't hesitate: “Babadag”.

‘Babadag’ is a name with particular resonance throughout Azerbaijan; it means ‘Father Mountain’, and has a reputation as a place where climbers’ wishes come true. Now, the name of Oqtay’s honey brand is the reflection of his own dream-come-true experience linked to the expansion of his family honey business.

Should note that Oktay Ganiyev became one of the ABAD’s beneficiaries within the framework of the joint project of ABAD, Global Environmental Facility and the United Nations Development Programme titled "Assisting local high mountain communities with alternative sources of income".
