Tahir Guliyev, a resident of Baku, is a sculptor-painter. He is a member of the Azerbaijan Artists’ Union. Born into an intellectual family, he is the grandson of People’s Artist Mohsun Sanani.

“There have been many figures of art in our family. Apart from my famous grandfather, my aunt is the renowned composer Farida Guliyeva. I believe the talent gene comes from them. However, the majority of our family members worked in the medical field. My aunt also served as the rector of a medical university, and it was assumed that my future would be in healthcare.

But one day, my mother casually asked me whether I generally wanted to become a doctor. It was the first time I thought that I might have other choices. Everyone started listing professions—teacher, scientist, and so on. My mother, however, asked about fine arts. Having loved painting and sculpting since childhood, something sparked inside me. From that day, I began my struggle to become an artist. Thus, I enrolled in the Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute and graduated from the Faculty of Painting Graphics and Sculpture.”

Having achieved great success in this journey, Tahir Guliyev, a participant and laureate of numerous local and international exhibitions, is also an “ABAD” artisan. His works, including backgammon boards, are created using several decorative-applied folk art techniques: carving, painting, silk stencil printing, and more. In addition, T. Guliyev’s exquisite paintings are also presented in boutiques.
