"ABAD" beneficiary: Lala Mustafayeva | Region: Baku | Artistic dolls
Within the framework of the ABAD initiative, one of the supported sectors is decorative-applied folk art — a traditional craft that plays a vital role in preserving and promoting Azerbaijan’s cultural heritage. Among the artisans engaged in this field is Lala Mustafayeva, a resident of Baku, who has been creating handcrafted dolls in national style for over a decade.
Ms. Mustafayeva, who discovered her passion for creativity during her early childhood, recalls:
“I remember making various decorative figures using modeling clay that my parents would buy for me. Although my family initially disapproved of this interest, I followed my passion, continued developing my skills, and ultimately achieved meaningful success in this field.”
Deeply inspired by Azerbaijan’s rich cultural traditions, Ms. Mustafayeva meticulously studies historical periods and traditional garments, incorporating era-specific patterns and sketches into her creations. Her handmade dolls reflect the diverse aesthetic heritage of different time periods in Azerbaijani history.
In addition to doll-making, she has explored other branches of decorative-applied folk art. Her work also includes handcrafted necklaces, chests, pouches, and quilted items made from natural materials, particularly local stones and textiles.
Seeking support in organizing and expanding the sale of her intricate crafts, Lala Mustafayeva joined the ABAD network. Her work is now showcased and available for purchase at ABAD’s official artisan centers.
