"ABAD" beneficiary: Nargiz Abbasova | Region: Baku | Decorative-applied art

“Among the artisan families supported by ABAD is the Abbasov family from Baku. Family representative Nargiz Abbasova specializes in decorative-applied folk art, particularly in the field of traditional embroidery.
For the past five years, she has been crafting national costumes that have attracted considerable interest, especially from tourists. Her creations are known for incorporating elements of Azerbaijan’s rich cultural heritage, with a special focus on historical authenticity and artistic detail.
Nargiz Abbasova notes that there was once a significant gap in the availability of handcrafted items reflecting the traditional dress culture of the Azerbaijani people. This absence inspired her to fill that void by reviving and innovating within this craft. She began producing souvenirs inspired by traditional garments to help preserve and promote Azerbaijan’s cultural identity.
The artisan primarily creates costumes representing the historical regions of Karabakh, Ganja-Gazakh, and Shirvan. Her main motivation in joining ABAD was to receive support in marketing and promoting her products. Previously, she faced difficulties in showcasing and selling her handmade items, but through ABAD’s assistance, she now aims to expand her family business and reach a broader audience.
Today, Nargiz Abbasova’s vibrant, culturally significant works are displayed and sold at the ABAD Artisan Center located in Icherisheher (Old City), Baku.
